It is a common and very severe complication of diabetes. It is more seen affecting the diabetic patients who are on insulin treatment.

It occurs due to the abnormally low levels of blood glucose in the body which can lead to dizziness, cognitive impairment which may even progress to severe conditions like seizures, loss of consciousness, coma and even death.

A diabetic patient is considered to be hypoglycemic when the blood glucose level goes below 70mg/dl.

  • An increased dose of insulin than prescribed.
  • Unplanned intense exercise or vigorous activities
  • Less intake of carbohydrates
  • Missed or delayed in between snacks
  • Conditions like liver failure, renal failure malabsorption syndrome
  • Alcohol and certain drugs
  • Increased sweating
  • Pounding heart
  • Shivering
  • Headache & nausea
  • Increased hunger
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Speech difficulty

In most of the time, you will be able to recognize your symptoms of hypoglycemia and treat yourself with appropriate immediate action by eating a sugar snack.

But in certain conditions like during sleep or when one is distracted by other activities one may not recognize the warning symptoms. Cases have been reported on road traffic accidents  when the driver was in a state of  hypoglycemia.

  • If one experiences the above mentioned symptoms and is conscious enough to swallow, then one may take glucose or any fast acting source of carbohydrates like honey or sweets.
  • If one has an altered sense of consciousness and is unable to swallow, then immediately hospitalize the patient to prevent further complications.
  • Always carry any fats acting source of carbohydrates like sweets, sugar tablets or carry self glucagon injections.
  • Regular blood sugar monitoring
  • Taking the prescribed dose of insulin and oral anti-diabetic drugs on time
  • Take meals regularly on time and never skip meals
  • Take light snacks in between meals and also before bedtime
  • Avoid intense exercise especially on empty stomach
